I am always seeing and thinking within the context of painting.
As a representational artist, whether I am painting or not, I spend a good amount of time on the lookout for subject matter that may give me the right juxtaposition of compositional elements, color and value. It is a folly to attempt to record a world in flux; but the challenge of open-air painting to capture that evasive atmospheric effect compels me. Time flies and there is no time for second-guessing that studio work allows. When I’m fully engaged, the process is as valuable as the end result – concentrated work that heightens the present with a sense of urgency. To see the world in the unique way of an artist is in itself endlessly entertaining; and engaging with it in paint, even more so.
